It was five weeks ago that CAP Beauty (my absolute favorite natural beauty store located in the West Village) hosted a special afternoon with Valérie Grandury, founder and creator of Odacité Skincare. I had read many wonderful things about the brand online and it was on the top of my list of products to try next so I knew that I had to go to learn more. Immediately upon meeting Valérie her warm presence and easy going personality made me feel as if I was learning from a friend I had known for years. We went through my goals for skincare products, which was to find something I could use daily that would hydrate my skin for the transition of Winter into Spring while protecting it from sun exposure and life running around the city.
We decided on the Beauty Day Moisturizer with MSM and DMAE as well as the Green Tea + Lemongrass Serum Concentrate from the Pure Elements Collection. For the serum, there is eighteen targeted remedies to choose from, I included the table below for reference to figure out what serum or multiples serum will work best for you. Just a few drops will do the trick and create results immediately. Seriously, this stuff is amazing.
Valérie instructed that I should add 2-3 drops of the oil into the moisturizer for extra hydration. This first morning I actually exclaimed OMG the moment I put it on. Not only does it smell out of this world but my skin just soaked it up as soon as it touched my face. By the end of the day I was still hydrated and silky smooth. SOLD. I have continued to use it daily and it still amazes me how quickly I feel the difference and the way my skin craves these products.
Odacité was created after Valérie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. This event triggered her to take a serious look at how she was living her life and what she was putting in and on her body. As she explored the world of natural skincare products she wondered how companies could not have a manufacturing date on products and how the ingredients maintained their active properties after sitting on shelves for so long. She began to make her own skincare products and word quickly spread. Always sticking to her motto, ““It all lies in the freshness of the raw ingredients,” Odacité was born. And the world of skincare is a better place because of it
All Odacité products are 100% natural made from the freshest, purest, organic ingredients from around the world. They also include a “freshiency date”, completely transparent as to the window of time when each ingredient in your product is full of freshness and efficiency. Valérie is an extraordinary woman who is creating products that are an experience you owe yourself. I am honored to share the Odacité love with you and hope you enjoy this very special interview with Valérie.
Could you share more about the story of your diagnosis and the path that led to Odacité?
After I was diagnosed in 2004, I realized that if I wanted to heal and for the cancer never to come back, I had to change everything about my life, starting with a total “detox” of my lifestyle.
This “detox healing journey” led me to look into everything that came in contact with my body. I was horrified when I found out about the toxicity of skin care products and their direct link to breast cancer.
We French are very serious about skin care 😉 Not finding anything I felt was bridging absolute purity and efficiency, I started blending fresh skin care products. First for myself, then for a few high profile clients in LA. Word spread fast, demand grew quickly. It took me on an amazing journey, filled with lots passion, many challenges and discoveries, years of research and scouting the world for the best ingredients.
In 2009 the universe sent me the most amazing business partner and together we launched Odacité (french play on Audacity) making my formulation available online.
Today we ship fresh from our California lab to homes and boutiques in 30 countries.
What other ways did your lifestyle change after 2004 as you began your healing journey?
Once I realized that my lifestyle had definitely contributed to me getting sick, it was obvious I had to reinvent everything. I adopted a raw vegan diet, started yoga and meditation daily. Sold the big Hollywood Hills party house and moved to beautiful unpolluted Topanga canyon between LA and Malibu. Quit my producer job and went back to school to become a health and wellness coach.
Who/what/where do you draw inspiration from?
Nature is my main source of inspiration. Whether it is through the beauty of a landscape, the healing power of the food I eat or the potent benefits of ingredients I use for my products – nature is an endless source of inspiration and a prospect of beauty and wonder.
Every day is a journey and to make sure nature is present in every single day, my two mutts and I start every morning with a hike to watch the sunrise. This communion with nature helps me connect with the grace of life and sprinkles beauty on everything I do. Nature give me strength & energy, nature reminds me that life needs to be protected and respected no matter what!
Your daily skincare routine?
Exfoliate on dry skin with Jojoba Beads Exfoliant – rinse in shower. This helps cell turnover, gives me baby soft skin and allow for a better penetration of my creme and serum
I use a night cream both day and night (Night Time Repair Serum) + alternate depending on my skin’s needs one of my Serum concentrates
Ultra-effective Eye Cream
Cleanse (Gentle Rejuvenating Cleanser). I never use any foaming ingredient on my skin as it alters the PH of the skin and accelerates the aging process by removing the delicate oil balance of the skin
Night Time Repair Serum + Vitamin C serum “An Autumn On The World”
Ultra effective Eye Cream
Go-to makeup routine and products for day and night?
I rarely wear makeup. If I do I choose products that share the same philosophy of absolute purity.
Mineral foundation: W3ll People
What role does fashion and personal style play in your life? How does this tie into your view on beauty and wellness?
Just like my products pair the french savoir faire of skincare with the California green revolution, my style is a fusion of Parisian Chic with a California vibe.
Being raised in Paris I love fashion, yet I’m so busy I need to keep it simple.
I’m a black and white kind of girl. What I love about black and white is it always looks chic and elegant.
With black and white you don’t need to pair outfits, so it makes it super fast and easy to put something together, especially when I travel.
I accessories the back and white outfit with a pretty colored scarf, designer tote and a nice pair of shoes/boots.
Vegan, 80% raw, 20% cooked.
Favorite dish to cook at home?
Ohlala so many… I love cooking so much I have a newsletter “eating for beauty” that goes out every Saturday. My philosophy for food: Needs to taste delicious and every single ingredient should create health and harmony in your body.
If I have friends over I will most likely prepare a vegan curry made with fresh coconut milk and lots of veggies, as I know everybody (vegan/non vegan) will love it.
Will serve it with a green papaya salad and brown rice. Nice bottle of crisp white or rosé Txakoli from the Basque country.
For desert I will make a raw key lime pie.
Finish with a Moroccan fresh mint tea for digestion.
Mind, Body & Soul
Daily rituals to keep you grounded?
Mind: Yoga 3 x week
Body: I bring my lunch to work and make sure I stop for at least 30 min.
Soul: Daily morning hike to watch the sunrise.
I also make it a rule to participate to at least one “self improvement” seminar every month, for April it is: How to apply mindfulness practice to our everyday work life and to transform our experience at work from stress to usefulness, well-being and fulfillment.
What are the “jewels” in your life? (i.e. your passions, favorite topics, people, places, etc.)
One of the great things of having been faced with a potentially deadly disease is that life becomes a jewel, no matter what 🙂
I feel incredibly blessed to be given a second chance at life and try to count my blessings, not my problems.
To be more specific about my jewels: Two amazing sons who are living their passion, a loving husband who supports my passion, a job that makes me wake up happy to go to work, a french family who despite the 5,642 miles that separates us is always close, brilliant friends who stimulate me, Paris my hometown who is the most beautiful city in the world and nature that never never seize to amaze me.
Thank you Valérie for sharing your story on Jewels of a Dreamer!
